A tribute to Dick Green

This writer just wanted to say a few things about the late Dick Green. His memorial visitation and service were held during the weekend and it brought back many memories.

As a local Syracuse attorney, Green was more than well known throughout the community. He approached legend.

Dick, Sandy and family gave back generously with time, talent and monetarily. He loved the lake. He loved the community and he did what he thought was the best during his lifetime. Not everyone can claim these qualities.

As a long time fan of Indiana basketball, it tickled me Green had played such a big part in the history of the state’s sport obsession. Basketball may not be the big deal it was back in the day, but it sure has a place in the hearts of many of us. He came from the era when the first thing anyone said when a kid was tall was “You are going to play basketball, aren’t you?” He was tall and he did play for Marion High School and Butler University. He set scoring records in high school and his Butler team was the first to reach the NCAA Sweet 16.

Of course, he had a long and distinguished law career in Marion and Syracuse and was involved in many important cases. He work tirelessly to better his communities and was honored during his lifetime for doing so.

Dick and Sandy were always so warm and welcoming to me whenever I saw them out and about. They always spoke, welcomed me to sit with them at events, and were friendly. That is a gift to be appreciated, especially with the current atmosphere some people project into the community.

Green’s care, concern and influence are missed by many. I am sure many others join in wishing heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

He was one of the good guys.
