Congresswoman Walorski to attend women’s suffrage centennial celebration
The centennial anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that granted women the right to vote is Aug. 26. To celebrate this event, an old fashioned ice cream social is set with Congresswoman Jackie Walorski greeting the crowd at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at the gazebo in Lakeside Park, Syracuse.
“It’s particularly fitting that a U.S. Congresswoman can join us to highlight that not only can women vote, but they now play an active role in making our laws and policies!” said Mark Knecht, president of Chautauqua-Wawasee. “We are so pleased Congresswoman Walorski is able to join us.” The ice cream is free, provided by Joe’s Premium Ice Cream of Syracuse.
To celebrate the centennial anniversary of women winning the decades long battle for the right to vote, a series of celebration events are being jointly sponsored by Indiana Humanities, Chautauqua-Wawasee, Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum, Syracuse Public Library, Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber and Kosciusko County Visitors Commission. These are:
• Aug. 26 — 6:30-7:30 p.m. Mapping Indiana’s suffrage history with Melissa Gentry presenting at Oakwood Resort Inn.
• Aug. 29 — 10-11 a.m. Girls rock kindergarten-sixth grade children’s event with Margo Wilson presenting at Syracuse Public Library.
• Aug. 29 — 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m. Old fashioned ice cream social at Syracuse Lakeside Park.
• Sept. 5 — 2-3:30 p.m. Hoosier women who raised a ruckus with Marsha Miller presenting at the Syracuse Community Center.
All events are free to attend and open to the public. Due to the expected attendance for the ice cream social, an event plan was submitted and approved by the Kosciusko County Health Department. Masks are required and social distancing is expected per the Indiana Governor’s executive order.
