The weather was just right, almost perfect, for the annual Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation’s Falltastic Trail Walk Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19-20.

It was estimated more than 175 adults and children and 63 dogs came out to the Levinson-LaBrosse Lakes & Wetlands Education Center for the event. Many noted they were visiting the center for the first time, while others learned more about the trails.

Those taking advantage of the 60 degree weather with sunshine and a few clouds were able to take leisurely strolls on three trails and hear singing insects and birds, view chipmunks skittering across the trails, see the start of fall colors and decorations along the trails. Just in case they were not sure which way to go at a couple of junctions, a friendly ghost was there pointing them in the right direction.

The trails were decorated for the season as well as educational information. Among the educational information was learning what nature and fall had to offer. There were pictures of what wildlife animal tracks might be found if you looked closely; how the wetlands help the lakes; how deer, birds and insects get ready for winter; information about the autumnal equinox; how a lake gets ready for winter, and just some fun facts. Signs at the trail heads provided information about the conservancy and the wetland plants and fish found on the property.

Visitors also had an opportunity to check out the Memorial Garden area on Trail 1 and look out over the Conklin Bay wetlands and a look at the new amphitheater.

All walkers could finish their adventures at the Ruddell Pavilion for light refreshments.
