Thunder Run

Cruzin’ just loves this photo from the Thunder Run folks on Lake Wawasee. How often do you see all these wooden boats in main channel, going under the railroad bridge with a train going over? This is from the end of the 2018 report on the Thunder Runs by Luke and Jeanne Knecht. They shared, “A total of 65 different classics took part in our Sunday wooden boat parades. Only one true rain-out occurred. That left us with 15 official Sunday Thunder Runs. The top participant this year was again Sandy Cobbum in Rev II who made 14 of the 15 runs.Luke and Jeanne Knecht were second with 13 runs in Sweet Pea followed by Bill and Barb Coon in Miracle II with 12. Aside from the weekly Thunder Runs, Wawasee Wooden Boats organized its third wooden boat rally in June at the Oakwood Resort with 35 classics in the water and on-shore.“WWB also raised over $1,600 for local charities such as Rose Home North and Kosciusko Cancer Care Fund through its Ride Along for Charity program and five wedding rides and all who participated are sincerely thanked. Finally, we often are asked how many wooden boats call Wawasee or Syracuse their home.“Although our record keeping is certainly not perfect or official, we know of 93 different woodies that live on one of our two lakes and have been in the water over the last few years. Ten different manufacturers are represented with Chris Craft being the most numerous followed by Century, Hacker Craft, Lyman, GarWood, Thompson and Riva. Happy boating!”
