WPOA donates to Wawasee Yacht Club

(Photo by Tim Ashley)By Tim AshleyAssociate EditorDuring the regular monthly meeting of the Wawasee school board Tuesday, the board approved a $2,000 donation from the Wawasee Property Owners Association to the Wawasee Yacht Club. Funds will be used to cover Wawasee High School student fee costs when attending outdoor sports classes.The high school has an agreement with the Yacht Club and volunteers from the community teach students about sailing, canoeing and kayaking on Lake Wawasee.Janay Hackleman, instructor for the classes, wrote a letter to the WPOA asking for financial assistance.Bill Pipp, WPOA board member who is also involved with the Wawasee Yacht Club, said “we are trying to find ways to get more people involved with the lake” and the high school class is one way to do so. He said a long term goal is to even get middle school kids involved.The classes are held during the first trimester due to the warmer water temperature in the lake.
