Snow can’t stop the Syracuse Winter Carnival

By Nicholette CarlsonStaff WriterSnow couldn’t stop Syracuse residents from enjoying the annual Syracuse Winter Carnival Saturday, Feb. 10, even after the snowmobile races were canceled.The event kicked off with the roar of a chainsaw during an ice carving demonstration on Main Street beginning at noon.Wawasee Plaza, the corner of North Huntington Street and Main Street, was busy from noon to 3 p.m. providing a free hot cocoa bar and face painting. Girl Scouts were inside selling their cookies and Cub Scouts were outdoors selling chili and hot chocolate to stay warm for those who ventured out into the blustery day.A sled dog demonstration took place beginning at 2 p.m. with the sled dogs showing off their skills running up and down Main Street. A group of malamutes from Tarnish Malamutes and trained by Belva Sutton were out to pull a sled and show their obedience skills. Keith Miller also brought two younger Siberian huskies and a Labrador to get some sled dog training.All of the dogs were eager for attention from the Syracuse Winter Carnival visitors.
