Teen drowns in Lake Wawasee

Christopher Dixon, 13, Elkhart, drowned in Lake Wawasee late Friday evening, Sept. 22. He was the son of John and Sandra Dixon, Elkhart, and grandson of Mary Lou Dixon, Syracuse.The drowning occurred at the Dixon lake home, 10768 N. Southshore Drive, Syracuse.According to press releases from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, authorities were called at 11:53 p.m. to the residence after Dixon’s mother could not locate him. According to the releases, Sandra Dixon went to check on her son, who is autistic and who had gone to bed. She was unable to locate him and asked her husband for assistance.A search for the teen was conducted and after approximately 30 minutes he was located in Lake Wawasee, unresponsive. Emergency personnel performed CPR in attempts to resuscitate the teen, but were unsuccessful. The coroner’s office pronounced him deceased at the scene.Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by the Indiana State Police, Syracuse Police Department, Turkey Creek Fire Territory Fire Department and EMS and the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office.The drowning remains under investigation.
