Richard Allen Green
2017 Wawasee Flotilla Commodore

Richard Allen (“Dick”) Green passed early Saturday morning, Dec. 12, 2020, at his home on Lake Wawasee.

He was born Jan. 21, 1942, in Van Buren, to Edward R. and Vivian I. (Endicott) Green. He married Sandra (“Sandy”) Shawley May 31, 1969.

He graduated from Marion High School in 1960, where he also played basketball as a Giant, during which he set regular season and single game scoring records. He was member of the Indiana Basketball All Stars (North) following his senior season.

He graduated from Butler University in 1964 with a business administration degree. A four-year basketball player, his 61-62 team was inducted into Butler’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007 in recognition as the first Butler team to reach the NCAA Sweet 16.

In 1970, Dick graduated from IU’s McKinney School of Law. That same year he and Sandy moved back to Marion, where he would practice for 16 years; serving publicly for periods as first deputy prosecutor and later city attorney.

In 1986, he moved his family and his practice to the Wawasee community in Syracuse, where he would practice another 34 years — receiving recognition by the Indiana Bar for 50 years of legal service.

A passionate lover of the lake, Green served on the board of directors of Wawasee Area Conservancy receiving their Cattail Award for participation and leadership. He was also a member of the Wawasee Property Owners Association for decades and honored in 2015 with their “Chief” Award for service. Dick was also a long-time advisor to the Turkey Creek Regional Sewer District and was instrumental in the installation of the sewage system around Wawasee, as well as other lakes in the state. One of his most enjoyable honors was that of “Commodore” in the Wawasee Flotilla, 2017.

His favorite activities were (bad) golf, swimming, boating, eating and celebrating with family and friends and following the Butler basketball team; he was immensely proud to be a Bulldog.

Dick is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandra; his son, Rob, and daughter-in-law, Cindy, his three grandchildren, Carlton Jordan, 24, Allison Dee, 22, and Kathryn Isabelle, 20; his brother, Larry; and sister, Sara O’Neil.Memorial donations may be made to WACF at wacf.com/support/ and Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund at http://koshelpcenter.org/programs/kosciusko-county-cancer-care-fund/.
