Syracuse-Wawasee Trails Committee discussed the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Conklin Bay project at the Monday night, July 20, meeting.

An update on the new project was also discussed. Minor issues are still being addressed. Selge Construction was on-site last week to follow up. Erlene Yentes, executive director, updated the committee that educational signs are located along the trail.

“One more will be at the entrance to the boardwalk,” said Yentes.

She gave kudos to Heather Harwood, Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation’s executive director, for designing the signs and Jeff Herdich for installing the signs.

Discussion about maintaining the Conklin Bay boardwalk and trail also took place.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 30, at the entrance to WACF. Details were discussed and items are being finalized. Invitations were mailed to the project’s donors, as well as local, county and state government agencies. So far, 60 RSVP’s have been received. The public is also invited to the ribbon cutting.

A small section of trail was finished on North Eastshore Drive, right before the railroad tracks. The committee is in the process of replacing the bad deck boards along Pickwick Drive. Strategic planning for the trails was also discussed.

Dr. Tom Edington, treasurer, gave June’s financial report.

A car cruise-in will be Sunday, Aug. 2, at Oakwood Resort. Pre-registration is $20 and $25 the day of registration. Registration forms can be downloaded from the trail’s website at www.SyracuseWawaseeTrails.com.

The next meeting is at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17.
