Lightning starts fire in log cabin home

By Deb PattersonStaff WriterLIGHTNING CAUSES FIRE — Lightning possibly striking a pole near the home of Todd McCulloch, with the electrical current following lines into the home, caused extensive damage to the home early Tuesday morning. (Photo by Deb Patterson)A loud crack woke Brooklyn McCulloch around 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19. Then she smelled smoke and awoke others in the log cabin home occupied by Todd McCulloch and his family.The family was able to exit the home safely. The fire was at 9670 E. 1250N, Syracuse.Turkey Creek Fire Department was notified and McCulloch contacted his brother, Dan, who brought an excavator. The fire started in the west end of the home, a garage area, and quickly traveled into the second floor of the home.Turkey Creek Fire Chief Mickey Scott called for tanker assist from Ligonier, Benton, New Paris, Cromwell, North Webster and Milford. Manpower was also provided by several of the departments.According to Scott, there is fire damage to the second floor of the home and smoke damage to the main floor.
